Editor in Chief of The Adams Papers editorial project at the Massachusetts Historical Society
Sara Martin is the Editor in Chief of The Adams Papers editorial project at the Massachusetts Historical Society. She holds a M.A. in history and graduate certificate in documentary editing and scholarly publishing from Arizona State University and also earned a Ph.D. in history from the University of Melbourne.
In her role as project director of the Adams Papers, Martin oversees the print and digital publication of the cumulative writings of Abigail Adams, John Adams, and three generations of their family. Her work includes editing the family’s private and public letters, along with their journals, diaries, and other papers.
Elected an Honorary Fellow of the Massachusetts Historical Society, Martin has held service positions with the Association of Documentary Editing and National Council on Public History and currently serves as an advisor to the Papers of Thomas Jefferson and the Joseph Smith Papers. Her work connecting the public with the past includes collaborations with the Daughters of the American Revolution, the American Battlefield Trust, GBH, the American Repertory Theater, Museum of the American Revolution, and the White House Historical Association.
Martin’s previous experience includes historical consulting on cultural heritage projects, working on National Historic Landmarks nominations, and research that built narratives from the material culture of Australia’s central Victorian goldfields.
